The federal agency has struggled to maintain its critical database since a budget reduction of 12 percent occurred in 2024, this funding drop coincided with a massive 32 percent increase in reported software defects during the same period. The resulting bottleneck created a staggering backlog of 25,000 unanalyzed vulnerabilities by March 2025, officials eventually recognized that the existing operational model was no longer sustainable for a research focused organization. NIST is currently drafting formal guidance to standardize how these private entities should perform these enrichment tasks, the goal is to ensure consistency even as the work moves outside direct government control. Leadership is also exploring the use of machine learning to handle basic classification for lower priority flaws, though human oversight remains essential for critical systems.
Security Vendors and Researchers Prepare for Data Fragmentation
This transition raises immediate concerns regarding the neutrality of global security data, experts worry that private companies may score their own product flaws more leniently than a neutral third party regulator would.
